What Causes Cellulite on The Hips?

There are several arguments about the root cause of cellulite on the hips. Cellulite is more apparent on those who are overweight, or who carry excessive levels of body fat. As cellulite is caused by herniated subcutaneous fat, the less fat stores one has, the less likely they are to develop cellulite.

It has been said that one of the easiest ways to prevent cellulite from forming, is to never allow yourself to have enough body fat to allow it to do so. However this is incorrect for a few reasons, which are outlined below.

Is diet related to cellulite?

Yes, and no. As mentioned above, cellulite forms when subcutaneous fat becomes herniated. This results in the unattractive cottage cheese appearance. As cellulite is fat related, a low body fat level will reduce the chances of cellulite appearing. However, no one can maintain 0% body fat. As a result, everyone has some degree of fat stores in their body, which means anyone can develop cellulite on the butt, thighs and hips. Overweight people simply have a great chance of developing cellulite, because they have more fat stores.

There are several well known people who are "skinny", but still have cellulite, so it is not necessarily related to eating habits or fitness level. Some argue that cellulite is hereditary, that it is passed down from generation to generation. There is little or no evidence to support this, however.

I didn't have cellulite when I was younger!

Cellulite development occurs post-puberty. You will never see a young girl, even if she is overweight, with cellulite. It is not known why younger women don't seem to have cellulite, however there are people who claim that once puberty ends, cellulite can begin to develop quickly.
